I've always believed that the best medicine comes from nature, and over the years of living a plant-based lifestyle, I've experienced firsthand how powerful whole foods and herbs can be in supporting overall wellness. My energy improved, my digestion felt balanced, and I noticed I very rarely got sick, all thanks to nourishing my body the natural way.

After seeing firsthand how amazing edible plants could be, I decided to pursue further education to become an herbalist through the Herbal Academy. My studies have inspired me to share some of my favorite immune-boosting herbs with you.

What makes these herbs so amazing is that they work with your body, not against it. Many of them have been used for centuries to strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and promote long-term vitality. From adaptogens that help manage stress to antioxidant-rich plants that protect your cells, these natural ingredients are an easy and effective way to give your immune system a daily boost. Elderberry:

Elderberries have been celebrated for their potential to support the immune system and have gained a lot of popularity in recent years. Rich in antioxidants like anthocyanins and flavonoids, elderberries help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, contributing to better overall health. Elderberries are also rich in Vitamin C, which is the ultimate immune system booster.

Some studies suggest that elderberry extract may reduce the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms. Therefore, it's good to incorporate this herb into your wellness routine in the winter months when we are more prone to sickness.

The Anima Mundi Apothecary Black Elderberry Elixir is my favorite elderberry syrup. Unlike many elderberry syrups on the market that are loaded with refined sugar, which will only cause you to feel worse, this elderberry elixir is sugar-free and crafted from organic, wildcrafted, and ethically grown botanicals. This elixir combines elderberries with other herbal antivirals like shiitake mushrooms, Baikal Skullcap, reishi mushroom, and many of the other powerful herbs to help support a strong immune system.

You can use my code: "NATURALVEGAN" for 15% off! One of my favorite ways to take this elixir is by making my Ultimate Immune Boosting Elderberry Smoothie, which combines this syrup with healthy plant-based ingredients to nourish your body.

Echinacea:

Echinacea Purpurea, commonly known as the purple coneflower, has been utilized for centuries to support the immune system. You've probably seen this flower used in landscaping; however, its health benefits far outweigh its beauty!

Echinacea has been used for centuries in North America to treat a variety of ailments. It's most commonly used to treat the flu or common cold. In addition to supporting the immune system, echinacea has also been shown to reduce anxiety, be anti-inflammatory, and may even have anti-cancer benefits!

Echinacea is super easy to incorporate into your diet. My favorite way to incorporate echinacea into my diet is by drinking herbal teas with it. My favorites are Anima Mundi's No Cough Tea and Yogi Tea Echinacea Immune Support Tea.

Ginger:

Ginger is one of the most popular herbal remedies, and for good reason. Its primary active compound, gingerol, offers powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, both of which are essential for a healthy immune response.

Ginger is great because, unlike some of the other herbs in this list, ginger can easily be incorporated into savory recipes. I love making ginger-packed recipes like my Creamy One-Pot Vegan Ramen Noodles when I'm feeling under the weather.

It can also reduce inflammation. Chronic inflammation can impair the function of the immune system, leaving the body more vulnerable to illness. Ginger's anti-inflammatory properties help modulate the body's immune response, reducing excess inflammation and supporting immune function.

Ginger also has antimicrobial and antiviral properties, which may help prevent infections and promote faster recovery when you're sick. Directly fighting off bacteria and viruses, it helps the immune system stay strong and prevent illness. I take Sol-ti GINGER SuperShots (use code: "NATURALVEGAN" for 15% off) or drink my Turmeric Ginger Glow Juice almost every day to stay feeling my best.

Beyond its immune-boosting benefits, Ginger's antioxidant properties help combat oxidative stress and protect immune cells from damage.

Reishi Mushroom:

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), often referred to as the "mushroom of immortality," has been utilized in traditional medicine for centuries, particularly in Asian cultures, due to its profound effects on the immune system. Modern research supports these traditional uses, highlighting reishi's role as an immune modulator, which helps restore hormonal balance and regulate immune system activity, including combating tumors and cancerous cells.

Reishi enhances immune function by stimulating the activity of white blood cells, which are essential for identifying and eliminating pathogens. This stimulation can lead to improved immune responses, making the body more efficient at fighting off infections.

Beyond its immune-boosting properties, reishi is known for its anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce chronic inflammation, a factor that can impair immune function. Additionally, reishi has been associated with increased strength and stamina, lower cholesterol levels, and improved quality of life when used alongside traditional cancer treatments.

Incorporating reishi into your wellness routine, such as through Anima Mundi's Reishi powder, which I love adding to my Vegan Pho recipe, can be a natural way to support and enhance your immune system.

Chaga:

Chaga mushrooms (Inonotus obliquus) have been utilized for centuries in traditional medicine, particularly in Siberia and other parts of Asia, for their potential health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, including melanin and beta-glucans, chaga mushrooms are believed to support the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells, which are essential for combating infections. Additionally, chaga's anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce inflammation, contributing to overall health.

Chaga is one of the easiest medicinal mushrooms to incorporate into your diet because it has such a pleasant flavor. I love making my Delicious Chocolate Chaga Pancakes with pure chaga powder, or my Vegan Hot Chocolate Ice Cream with Anima Mundi's Mushroom Mocha Milk, which includes chaga along with 6 other powerful longevity mushrooms.

Oregano Oil:

Oregano oil, derived from the leaves of the Origanum vulgare plant, is renowned for its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. These attributes make it a valuable natural remedy for supporting the immune system. The primary active compounds in oregano oil, such as carvacrol and thymol, have been shown to possess antibacterial and antifungal effects, potentially aiding in the prevention and treatment of various infections.

Beyond its antimicrobial properties, oregano oil may also support digestive health by promoting a healthy balance of gut bacteria. A balanced gut microbiome is essential for optimal immune function, as a significant portion of the immune system is located in the gastrointestinal tract.

Additionally, oregano oil's anti-inflammatory effects may help reduce inflammation, a key factor in many chronic diseases.

While oregano oil offers promising health benefits, it's important to use it cautiously. High concentrations can cause skin irritation, and excessive oral intake may lead to gastrointestinal discomfort.

My preferred way to consume Oregano Oil is in pill form because the taste of the pure oil is intense. It's also important that you are taking oil of oregano, and not oregano essential oil which is not edible.

Cinnamon:

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum or Cinnamomum cassia) is more than just a warming, aromatic spice; it's also a powerful natural ally for immune support. Rich in antioxidants such as polyphenols and flavonoids, cinnamon helps fight oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which can compromise immune function over time.

Cinnamon has been studied for its antimicrobial and antiviral properties, which may help the body defend against harmful bacteria and viruses. Some research also suggests that cinnamon can enhance the activity of immune cells, contributing to a more robust response when the body encounters pathogens. Additionally, its ability to regulate blood sugar levels indirectly supports immune health, as balanced blood sugar is linked to reduced inflammation and improved immune resilience.

The best part is that cinnamon is super easy to incorporate into your diet, regardless of how you're feeling. I love making my Golden Milk Cinnamon Rolls because they contain cinnamon and other immune boosters, and they taste amazing!

Pau D'arco:

Pau D'Arco, derived from the inner bark of the Tabebuia tree native to South America, has been utilized in traditional medicine for its potential health benefits. Research indicates that Pau D'Arco possesses anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, which may contribute to its reputation as an immune system stimulant and disease fighter.

Pau D'arco is the first thing I reach for as soon as I start to feel under the weather. In my opinion, it's one of the strongest medicinal herbs out there. The best way to incorporate Pau D'arco into your diet is by making a tea with the powder. It has a slightly grainy texture and an earthy taste.

Incorporating Pau D'Arco into your wellness routine may offer a natural approach to enhancing immune function and overall health.

Turmeric:

Turmeric, scientifically known as Curcuma longa, is a vibrant yellow-orange spice derived from the rhizome of a flowering plant in the ginger family. Predominantly cultivated in South and Southeast Asia, turmeric has been a staple in culinary traditions and traditional medicine for centuries. Its active compound, curcumin, is responsible for its distinctive color and is believed to contribute to many of its health benefits.

Incorporating turmeric into your diet can be both flavorful and beneficial. Turmeric can be included in all types of recipes. It can be enjoyed raw in recipes like my Cold Pressed Golden Mango Juice, or in sweet recipes like my Golden Milk Ice Cream, or, of course, in classic savory recipes like my Chickpea Curry.

Beyond its culinary uses, turmeric has been promoted as a dietary supplement for a variety of conditions, including arthritis, digestive disorders, respiratory infections, allergies, liver disease, and depression. By regularly including turmeric in a healthy lifestyle, you can better support a healthy immune system.

Garlic:

Garlic (Allium sativum) has long been revered for its medicinal properties, particularly its ability to support and strengthen the immune system. Rich in sulfur compounds like allicin, garlic offers powerful antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects. Allicin is released when garlic is crushed or chopped and is responsible for many of its immune-supportive benefits.

Research has shown that garlic may enhance the function of white blood cells, helping the body respond more effectively to pathogens. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties can help reduce chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, two major factors that can weaken immune response over time.

Some studies also suggest that regular garlic intake may reduce the severity and duration of colds and other common illnesses.

Luckily, garlic is delicious and easy to incorporate into our daily lives. I love making recipes like my Creamy Lemon Garlic Tahini Pasta for a healthy comfort meal when I am in need of some extra immune support.

Garlic can also be consumed raw, but it is quite strong and spicy that way.

Fennel:

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a flavorful herb and vegetable known not only for its sweet, licorice-like taste but also for its powerful health benefits, especially when it comes to immune support.

It is a powerful, immune-supporting ingredient that's rich in vitamin C, a key nutrient for keeping your immune system strong and resilient. It also contains natural antioxidants that help protect the body from inflammation and oxidative stress, supporting overall wellness. On top of that, fennel has gentle antimicrobial properties, making it a great ingredient to lean on during cold and flu season or anytime you want to give your immune system a little extra support. I love combining it with Pineapple for even more Vitamin C when I make my Pineapple Fennel Juice!

Olive:

Olives and olive leaf extract, derived from the Olea europaea tree, have been valued for centuries in Mediterranean wellness traditions for their immune-supportive properties. The key compound in olives, oleuropein, is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent that helps protect the body from oxidative stress and supports a healthy immune response.

Olive leaf extract has been shown to have broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antiviral properties, which may help the body defend against common pathogens. Additionally, it may help regulate immune system activity, promoting balance rather than overstimulation. The healthy fats found in olive oil, particularly oleic acid, also play a role in reducing inflammation and supporting cellular health, which is vital for a well-functioning immune system. My favorite way to take olive leaf extract is in pill form. There are many companies that combine olive leaf extract and oregano oil together in their immune support supplements.

Holy Basil:

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum or Tulsi) is a revered adaptogenic herb in Ayurvedic medicine, often referred to as the "Queen of Herbs." Known for its ability to support the body's natural stress response, holy basil also plays a powerful role in boosting immunity. It contains compounds like eugenol, ursolic acid, and rosmarinic acid, which have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects.

Holy basil also helps regulate cortisol levels, which is key because chronic stress can suppress immune function. By calming the nervous system and reducing inflammation, Tulsi supports a balanced, resilient immune response. It has also been shown to enhance the activity of immune cells and may help the body fend off bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Many herbal teas contain holy basil because it has a delicious flavor. I love The Mind powder by Anima Mundi because it contains holy basil along with lion's mane, mucuna, lucuma, gotu kola, ginkgo, and brahmi. Make sure to use my code: "NATURALVEGAN" for 15% off!

Ashwagandha:

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), often called "Indian ginseng," is a potent adaptogen that has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. Known for its ability to reduce stress and promote mental clarity, ashwagandha also significantly supports immune health. Its active components, withanolides, have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which help protect the body from oxidative stress and promote a balanced immune system.

By reducing cortisol levels, ashwagandha helps prevent the immune system from being weakened by chronic stress. Additionally, it has been shown to increase the production of white blood cells and enhance overall immune function, making it a valuable herb for boosting resilience against infections and inflammation.

Ashwagandha is something I take every day. It has a very mild flavor, so it is easy to add to meals. Some of my favorite recipes that add ashwagandha to are my Vegan Yellow Curry, and my Cococnut Granola.

Astragalus:

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is a revered herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, known for its powerful immune-boosting and adaptogenic properties. The root of the astragalus plant is rich in polysaccharides, flavonoids, and saponins, which help stimulate the production of white blood cells, enhancing the body's defense against infections. Astragalus is also an antioxidant, helping to reduce oxidative stress, which can compromise immune function.

Studies have shown that astragalus may help activate key immune cells, including macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells, making it particularly useful for defending against viral infections and promoting overall immune system balance. Additionally, astragalus has been shown to help regulate inflammation, which supports a more efficient immune response.

Supporting your immune system doesn't have to be complicated or overwhelming. By intentionally incorporating these powerful herbs into your daily routine, you're giving your body the tools it needs to stay resilient, balanced, and nourished year-round.

Whether you start with one herb or slowly build a routine that works for you, remember that consistency and listening to your body matter most. Nature offers everything we need; it's just about learning how to use it with intention, patience, and care.
